Saramacca: The Green Garden of Suriname

Are you a lover of vast landscapes, bird watching, and authentic Surinamese farming culture? Then Saramacca is the district for you. Located west of Paramaribo, this area offers a refreshing mix of agricultural activity, historical sites, and untouched nature along the banks of the Saramacca River.

At Suriname Vakantiehuizen, we see Saramacca as the ideal destination for travelers who want to escape the city rush without spending hours on the road.

Groningen: A Historical Hub

The main town of Saramacca, Groningen, has a unique history. It was founded in the 19th century by Dutch farmers (known as the Boeroes) who attempted to build a new life here.

  • Monument Square: In the center of Groningen, you will find several monuments commemorating the various ethnic groups that shaped the district. It is a peaceful spot with a beautiful view over the river.
  • Bird Watching: Groningen is nationally famous for its songbird competitions. Especially on Sunday mornings, you can experience the passion of the locals for their birds. Additionally, the riverside area is a paradise for wild birds such as kingfishers and birds of prey.

The Country’s Vegetable Garden

Saramacca is often called the ‘kitchen garden’ of Suriname. Thanks to the fertile soil and hardworking farming communities (primarily of Hindustani and Javanese descent), a large portion of the fruits and vegetables found at the Central Market comes from this district.

  • Along the Kwattaweg: The road to Saramacca takes you past countless agricultural plots where you can buy fresh watermelons, citrus fruits, bananas, and various leafy greens directly from the farmers.
  • Authentic Atmosphere: The sight of expansive rice fields and small-scale farms gives you a glimpse into the genuine, honest life of the Surinamese countryside.

Adventure on the River and at Uitkijk

The Saramacca River is the lifeblood of the district and offers plenty of opportunities for recreation.

  • Uitkijk: This is a popular spot where the bridge connects the districts of Wanica and Saramacca. It is a lovely place to sit by the water, enjoy the breeze, and watch the passing korjalen (traditional dugout canoes).
  • Fishing and Boating: For sport fishermen, the river is an excellent place to catch the well-known tukunari or anjoemara. You can also book a boat trip to explore the smaller creeks where the jungle meets the water.

Culinary Saramacca

A visit to Saramacca is not complete without enjoying the local cuisine. Because many residents grow what they eat, the food here is as fresh as it gets.

  • Hindustani and Javanese Influences: Enjoy an authentic roti or a platter of various Javanese snacks (such as spring rolls and teloh) at the small eateries along the main road.
  • Fresh Juices: Try the local juices made from freshly picked fruits like markoesa (passion fruit) or soursop.

Planning Your Stay in Saramacca

Saramacca is only about an hour’s drive from Paramaribo, making it perfect for both a day trip and a longer stay.

Tips for your trip:

  • Rent a car: With your own car, you can easily explore the many side roads of the East-West Link, where the most beautiful landscapes are hidden.
  • Stay at a farm: In Saramacca, you can find various small-scale holiday homes and guesthouses located in the heart of nature or on a working farm.
  • Visit the local market: The Sunday market near Groningen is a must for those who love local products and a cozy atmosphere.

Saramacca invites you to slow down and enjoy the fertile abundance of Suriname. A district where nature and culture go hand in hand.
