Independence Square or Onafhankelijkheidsplein

During your stay in one of our beautiful vacation homes, a visit to the vibrant heart of Paramaribo, Independence Square, is a must. This square is much more than just a public space; it is a symbol of Surinamese history, culture, and unity.

A Historic Place with a New Face

Originally known as Gouvernementsplein, and later as Oranjeplein, the square was renamed in 1975 to honor Suriname’s independence. Surrounded by impressive monumental buildings, including the majestic Presidential Palace, the Congress Hall, and the National Assembly, the square exudes an atmosphere of grandeur and political significance.

What to See and Do

  • The Presidential Palace: This stately white building dominates the square and is a beautiful example of colonial architecture. While it is not always open to the public, the exterior is a breathtaking sight and a perfect backdrop for your vacation photos.
  • The Palm Garden (Palmentuin): Directly behind the Presidential Palace is the Palm Garden, a peaceful green oasis with hundreds of royal palms. It’s a wonderful place to escape the city’s heat, take a walk, or simply enjoy the tranquility.
  • Historical Monuments: On and around the square, you will find various statues and monuments honoring important Surinamese figures, such as Johan Adolf Pengel and Jagernath Lachmon, which reflect the country’s rich political history.

Unique Cultural Experiences

On Sunday mornings, the square transforms into a lively meeting place for the famous singing bird contests. Local men gather here with their birds, such as the picolet and the twatwa, to see which bird sings the most beautifully. This is a unique cultural experience you will not soon forget.

Independence Square is also the location for national events and celebrations, such as Independence Day, where the square is the setting for parades and festivities.

Combine your visit to Independence Square with a walk along the nearby Waterkant and the bustling Central Market to truly experience the diverse atmosphere of Paramaribo. It is the perfect place to discover the beauty and story of Suriname.
